Danny O'Malley is Founder and President of Before the Butcher, a plant-based meat analogue company that's seeking to change consumer food choices through their taste buds and wallets.
Danny cut his teeth in the industry at Beyond Meat, and learned both what to do and what not to do during his stint there. For example, his insistence that Before the Butcher attain profitability as an early goal is an imperative based on his seeing what happens when new companies take on huge debt to make a splash and attain market share.
In our conversation, we covered the current volatile landscape of plant-based processed foods, including all the gloom and doom financial narratives and how they're either confirmed or contradicted by the actual facts on the ground.
We talked about Danny's vision for the company and for the entire food industry, and what's valuable and frustrating about doing market research for products that don't yet exist and no one can yet taste.
And over and over, he hammered home his message to other plant-based entrepreneurs: find a tight niche, rather than trying to be a generalist. The market is too saturated now, and unless you find a way to stand out by differentiating your offering, you'll get lost in the noise.
Enjoy!
