This talk, "Ratana Sutta Sn1.2" was given by Sylvia Bay at the invitation of KL Dhamma Friends via zoom meeting on 14 Jun 2020. This is the recorded, edited and annotated version is scheduled for release on 17 Jun 2020.
Ratana Sutta from Sutta Nipāta (Sn 2.1), like the Karaṇīya Mettā Sutta (Sn1.8) and Maṅgala (Sutta Kp5) have a paritta or protection aspect to it. Does it really have a protection or blessing aspect? Sylvia Bay explains the context in which Buddha delivered the Sutta, where the city of Vesāli was strickened by famine, pestilence and evil spirits, quite similar to the current Covid-19 situation. In the Dhamma sharing, Sylvia shed light that the sutta has a strong emphasis on the qualities of the noble disciples of the Buddha, the Ariya Saṅgha and why they are important for us to draw inspiration for our practice and trigger wholesome mental states before we even chant. The sotāpanna or stream-enterer mind states and qualities are also explained. Sylvia also shared how lay people can dāna and express our gratitude.
