In this episode of the Office Visits with Dr. V, Dr. V gets personal as she has an intimate conversation with her cousin, Carol Crawford who has achieved 12 years of sobriety. She is currently a WHAM Certified Peer Specialist at New Horizon Behavioral Health in Columbus, GA. Through Carol’s story, we learn the struggles of addiction. This conversation is so important, especially due to the increase in substance use brought on by the pandemic and the opioid crisis in America.

Signs You May Have A Drug Addiction
You feel like you have to use the drug regularly, almost daily. You have urges, you keep thinking about it and you have to take more over time. You spend money on the drug even though you can't afford it. You are not meeting your obligations at work, responsibilities, and/or you are cutting back on social recreational activities. Continuing to use the drug, even though, you know, it is causing problems in your life or causing you physical or psychological harm. Doing things to get the drug that you normally wouldn't do such as stealing. You are doing risky activities when you're under the influence. And you're spending a lot of time either getting the drug, using the drug or recovering from the drug. These are some of the behaviors that occur with drugs. And, some drugs are easier for people to detect than others. Crack cocaine is an addiction that is harder to hide than say an opioid addiction. like crack cocaine that is easily detected by others like opioids where you can still function.
Special thanks to Carol for sharing her very intimate story in the hopes of helping others who may be on the verge of trying drugs like crack cocaine, heroin, or opioids. Or, those who are currently addicted and need a role model to help them see that life can exist after addiction. Carol Recommends Residential or Out-Patient Treatment Center for those looking to get help with substance use disorder.
